Congratulations to Prof Salome Maswime on her appointment as Head of School of Clinical Medicine

CONGRATULATIONS TO PROF. SALOME MASWIME ON HER APPOINTMENT AS HEAD OF SCHOOL OF CLINICAL MEDICINE

We are proud to celebrate Prof. Salome Maswime, a founding member of the FALF Board, on her appointment as Head of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, effective 1 June 2026.

Prof. Maswime is a globally renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, a pioneering researcher in global surgery, and a passionate advocate for health equity and women’s leadership in medicine. She currently serves as Professor and Head of the Global Surgery Division at the University of Cape Town, and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Integrated Clinical Care.

Her distinguished career includes over 100 publications, the successful supervision of 30 postgraduate students to completion, and numerous prestigious awards: the Presidential Trailblazer and Young Achiever Award (2017), the NSTF-SAMRC Clinician Scientist Award for pioneering global surgery in Africa (2023), and the International Healthcare Practitioner Award from Zenith Global Health, UK (2025).

She is an NRF Y-Rated Scientist and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Prof. Maswime completed her MBChB at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, her specialist training and PhD at Wits University, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Her journey reflects excellence, resilience, and purpose-driven leadership.
